In 1988, Fairtrade officially became an internationally recognized organization, aiming to ensure that workers in developing countries have a reasonable working environment and rewards, to ensure that workers and producers establish a fair trade system, and to enable sustainable social development.

Some examples of large organizations in Hong Kong that are associated with Fairtrade are Starbucks’ coffee beans, Ferrero Rocher’s cocoa, and Oxfam has also been promoting and organizing Fairtrade campaigns.

Although Fairtrade is often associated with environmental protection and natural products, Fairtrade certification has no direct relationship with organic labels. It is just that most fair trade products come from organic projects, which often confuses consumers.

Fairtrade has a high degree of recognition and popularity internationally. As an international metropolis, Hong Kong's level of commitment to fair trade and per capita consumption of Fairtrade products are far lower than other European and American countries, or even Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, and India. Fortunately, the survey report shows that when Hong Kong people understand that fair trade can directly help the grassroots labor force, give them reasonable treatment, and prevent them from being exploited by producers, they will also tend to buy products from Fairtrade.

Fairtrade international certification is a highly recognized qualification in the world. There are only less than five companies in Morocco that have obtained it among hundreds of various types of producers. Two of them are argan oil producers, and we are one of them. We are the only rose producer in Morocco, which is an absolute guarantee of confidence.

Fairtrade certification is both valuable and hard to come by. It requires compliance with multiple stringent requirements of the Fairtrade certification body. When inspecting multiple nut oil producers, almost every one of them claimed to be fair trade qualified, but in reality, only we can truly put the Fairtrade certification label in our factory.

We believe that the management policy of the manufacturer directly affects the product quality, so one of our directions is to look for fair trade manufacturers. Unfortunately, we found that all the manufacturers claiming to be fair trade did not have Fairtrade certification. After further investigation, we found that there are only two nut oil manufacturers in Morocco that can obtain Fairtrade international certification, and the manufacturer we represent is one of them.

The person in charge said that since fair trade gives consumers the feeling that they are giving back to society when shopping, almost all producers in Morocco, and even some organic products currently available in the market including Hong Kong, also label themselves as fair trade, which gives consumers a false impression and makes them more willing to consume, thereby increasing their income.

A manufacturer that truly adheres to Fairtrade means being willing to selflessly provide more resources to its employees and directly help all female workers. In today's profit-oriented world, especially in relatively backward Morocco, this is even more precious. We believe that all our income can truly and directly help local female workers, their families and children, and we can also contribute to one of the poorest people in the world when we provide health care.

摩洛哥婦女合作社(Moroccan Women's Cooperatives) 是一個非常有意義組織,旨在幫助基層婦女學習獨立生活,賺取更多收入從而提升生活質素,亦會為她們提供資源在教育上,協助她們融入社會。Fairtrade則是各婦女合作社最基礎的運作模式,以最公平原則為女工爭取最合理工作環境及回報。

摩洛哥第一家堅果婦女合作社(Argan Women's Cooperatives) 於1996年成立,由多間中小堅果油生產商組成,目的為沒有利益衝突下提高生產力以接納更多更大外銷訂單,增加市場透明度有利於長遠發展,從而達至各生產商雙贏局面,時至今日堅果婦女合作社已經擴展至數十家以上。

In 2005, our producers also formed the Women's Nut Cooperative with 4 other nut oil producers and are responsible for coordinating and managing the business of the entire women's cooperative. Now it has expanded to a total of 9 producers, about 450 female workers. Although each producer still handles its own orders independently, the cooperative will also arrange different female workers to participate in exhibitions from time to time to promote Moroccan nut oil, enhance the world's understanding of the nutritional value of Moroccan nut oil, and enhance the reputation of the cooperative.

Furthermore, more and more people understand the great benefits of argan oil to the human body, especially in Europe and America. There are countless skin care products on the market that use argan oil as an ingredient, so more and more overseas investors are competing to purchase argan oil or develop argan oil businesses, resulting in demand far exceeding the annual harvest. Because foreign investors do not understand the livelihood of Moroccans, many female workers are severely exploited. Another function of women's cooperatives is to effectively prevent such inequality from occurring.
