Rose Hydrosol

Rose water, like wine, is derived from the health of the plant in terms of quality and composition of compounds, which in turn is derived from the soil, water, weather, and other growing environments. Improper use of pesticides may result in the final rose product. Damascus roses from the Rose Valley of Morocco have been cherished and cultivated by Moroccans for many years. The Damascus roses are extracted from the Dades Valley, which flows through the High Atlas Mountains and is naturally infused with mineral-rich pure water. The Damascus rose water is then extracted using 100% traditional pure steam distillation, retaining all the healing properties of rose petals.

Rose water has strong antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It can soothe irritated skin, deeply condition and cleanse the skin, and restore vitality. It has many benefits for health and beauty. The active ingredient content is lower than that of rose essential oil or pure oil, which can be more gentle on the skin and nervous system. Rose water is often used for spraying on the face. It is mainly used to moisturize, refresh the skin and maintain the pH balance of the skin. The pleasant fragrance can also bring comfort, refreshment, and relieve stress. It is suitable for both men and women.

“Rose Water” Quality and Value Classification

Quality: Top quality, professional

Extraction method: Traditional steam distillation

Name: Rose Hydrosol

The top grade rose water is given a special name - Rose Hydrosol

Hydrosol refers to the highest quality water product from the traditional pure steam distillation method (Hydrodistillation). It also contains water-soluble plant compounds in rose essential oil and cannot be compared with the synthetic or added floral water in the market. Since the steam distillation method has complicated steps, high technology and cost, it is very rare in the market. Therefore, you will not see "floral water" marked with Hydrosol or indicating that it is made by steam distillation. On the contrary, there are a lot of Floral water/ Flower water/ Rose water products collectively referred to as "floral water". Although Floral water/ Flower water/ Rose water does not necessarily mean that the product is not from the top steam distillation method, but from the scientific name "Hydrosol" is a more trustworthy pure natural distillation product.

Rose water after distillation does not contain water, fragrance, preservatives, alcohol or any other substances, and has the greatest natural health and beauty effects. It is in a transparent and clear pure water state, with a light fragrance instead of a strong rose smell. Although rose water comes from the same plant compound as rose essential oil, the biggest feature of rose water is not the less than 0.1% rose essential oil in the rose flower, but all the water-soluble ingredients in the flower brought by the distillation method, which obtains more organic substances than essential oil, providing a more comprehensive and subtle effect, which is also the biggest reason why rose water can provide aromatherapy effects, so it is basically impossible to make a product exactly the same as rose water by yourself.

It is difficult to distinguish real rose water from the aroma alone. The real difference lies in the sediment at the bottom of the rose water.

Because during the distillation process, many components in the flowers dissolve in water at high temperatures, are condensed along with the water vapor, and form insoluble precipitates at room temperature.

Quality: Secondary

Extraction method: Double or multiple distillation of rose water/first distillation of rose water and then adding water

Name: Rose Hydrosol

The top-grade rose essential oil comes from the first extraction by traditional steam distillation, and the top-grade rose water also comes from the first extraction. However, because rose essential oil is very precious and rare, the rose water obtained by the first distillation is often re-distilled once or multiple times by unscrupulous manufacturers to release as much rose essential oil as possible with higher profits. This practice is called secondary distillation/reflux distillation (Cohobation). The remaining rose water has only very low rose ingredients and actual efficacy. The rose essential oil and water obtained by the first distillation are the most precious.

Of course, some manufacturers add extra pure water to dilute the rose water to make a lot of profit, but the effect or aroma of the rose is greatly reduced.

Quality: inferior

Extraction method: Add rose essential oil to pure water

Name: Floral water/ Flower water/ Rose water

It is made by mixing pure water with rose essential oil, but because the beneficial water-soluble plant compounds produced during the distillation process cannot enter the essential oil, the quality of this finished product is very low, and other additives are needed to make the oil and water mix. It is not true rose water.

Quality: Poor

Extraction method: Made by chemical synthesis

Name: Floral water/ Flower water/ Rose water

Some rose waters are not distilled at all, but are made in a laboratory by adding rose flavoring or synthetics to mimic distilled rose water and sell it at a higher price.

When a product goes through different stages of industrial processing, it is almost impossible to know what ingredients are added at each stage. Alcohol, preservatives (parabens), fungicides (fungicides) may be added to clean and preserve the rose water, or synthetic rose fragrance may be added to sweeten the rose water, color the rose water, or standardize the fragrance. For example, if the rose water exudes a strong rose scent, most of them are made by adding rose synthetics rather than steam distillation. There is a huge difference between the rose water produced by distillation and the rose water prepared in the laboratory.

Summary: The difference between Rose Hydrosol and Rose Water

Rose Hydrosol and Rose Water often appear on natural products, but these two similar names cause confusion for many buyers. Although both symbolize water, the production process and nutritional value are very different. Rose Water can be made by steam distillation, water with rose essential oil, or synthetic. All finished products related to flowers and water can be called floral water. The broad general term is easy to confuse buyers. But Rose Hydrosol must be made by steam distillation. It is a diluted product made from the same plants as rose essential oil and contains plant compounds and nutrients.
